 June 5, 2024, Day 1 - The leaving! (3 1/2 hours cruising)

Cape Mudge, Quadra Island

Tsa Kwa Luten Lodge Quadra Island

Mittlenatch....Naturalists Paradise

We are finally off the dock. Short run today from the "Riviera" to Campbell River.  Fuel is .20/lt cheaper and when  you take on more than 1000 lt. worth the run up the "Freeway" (Johnston Strait) instead of the inside channels.  Wandering the coast is not a cheap hobby, took on 1300+ litres - fuel ended up being 1.53.  Should last us until mid July when we start out trip home.

While making the journey to Campbell River, we are relieved that the weather is good and that we have fairly good seas.  We always have our VHS radio on as it's part of the entertainment when we are cruising and it also lets us know when there are friends in the area!  We are listing to an exchange between a boater and Coast Guard @ 2:30 in the afternoon;
Boater:  Can you tell me how fast the tide is running in Seymour Narrows
( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUXjrMgVcPw?)
Coast Guard:  Currently it's running 15 knots
Boater: Silence
Coast Guard:  How fast do you cruise?
Boater: 7.2 knots
Coast Guard: suggest you wait until 6:00 pm to transit - 2 knots

So I have Boater in italics as Mike and I just looked at each other in amazement, and amusement as anyone travelling on the water should have tide tables.  There are so many tidal bores (https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/tidal-bore/) up and down the coast, including on the Gulf Islands, so we wonder how he will make out on his trip north.  Could be a scary ride or slow ride if he isn't careful!

Uneventful trip to Campbell River where we dock at Discover Marine after taking on a load of fuel and water.  Thank goodness the water is still free!
