Humpback enroute to Wrangell
Another beautiful cruising day – a bit of rain and then bright sunshine when we reach Wrangell. We get moorage in the Heritage Marina. There are three to choose from in Wrangell and the optimum one is the inner harbor. We are about ½ mile from town, so in the water the dinghies go. A little shopping and and nice breakfast out. We were going to take the Le Conti Glacier tour from here but it would have added 3 hours onto the tour as we would have gone through Petersburg. We opt to see if we can get a tour out of Petersburg. The tides are not conducive for even the jet boats to use “Dry Straits” as part of their route into the glacier. Dry Straits do exactly that at low tide as it’s the delta for the Stikine River. We spend a nice day in town with a “greasy spoon” breakfast and some shopping. Hockey Game on tonight, so we make sure we are back in time to get the game! It will be nice when this series is over so that we aren’t tied to making sure we are somewhere where we can get satellite. When we were in Wrangell 7 years ago, we met a character by the name of “Doc.” We were not able to get any information on the whereabouts of Doc on our last trip in 2008, but did see his boat – “Zimovia” – at the docks still. The harbor master told us this trip that Doc managed to put his boat on the rocks and was in the Philippines somewhere cruising for a new wife. There is a whole story behind meeting Doc in 2004 and the most hospitable treatment he gave to us in our stay in Wrangell. We were sorry to hear that he has lost his boat and things are a bit awry in his life.
We head out in the morning to Petersburg. Just as we pull out, “On the Edge” backs up and promptly leaves her dinghy behind --- WTG Bob! There were all sorts of salvage claims in the group for the “Over the Edge” but Bob beat us back to his own dinghy.
