5:00 am departure again – Sunny with no fog leaving Prince Rupert! Flat calm crossing through to the top of Dundas Island. Once we round the corner to Dixon entrance we are greeted with long and low ocean swells. A pod of half a dozen killer whales greet us at the top of Dundas Island. Lots of boats fishing the area but we don’t see any fish being caught. All in all a good crossing. “Gulf Island” experiences some engine problems while leaving Prince Rupert when one of his water hoses fall off. So their departure is delayed by about and hour and half. In that time, Prince Rupert is completely socked in with Fog. She makes her way across Dixon Entrance with no problem but experiences a problem with a filter off of one of her engines after they cross into Revilliago Channel. She manages to limp into Ketchican on one motor and we will hunt down a new part in the morning! We gain an extra hour in Ketchican with the time change up here.
Ketchican Harbor is thick with cruise ships again. “On the Edge” gets chased by one of the Celebrity cruise ships as she makes her way to Bar Harbor Marina.
We all clear customs in the late afternoon – we hear from the Customs lady that there were 18 pleasure craft cleared through customs the day before our arrival and 5 cruise ships today alone with it also being the once in 90 day cruise ship clearance – they are one busy bunch during the late spring to early fall crusing season. and head to the pub for a pizza to celebrate our good crossing. The wind picks up after we get docked and continues to blow strong most of the night.. Ketchikan population is approximately 12,000 with most geared to the tourism industry (cruise ships) – there is some fishing here (commercial) but the population decreased when the mill shut down in town.
