A beautiful trip, warm and sunny weaving our way through the back door bays and channels on the inside of the Gulf of Alaska. This area will be saved for another time as you could easily spend a week or so in all of the different bays and hot springs that this area has to offer. We make it into Pelican just before the deluge of rain hits us. Pelican is a former cannery town with boardwalk roads and lots of houses/cabins. Pelican is known for its once famous Ice Production in the fishing heyday, and the towns folks are trying to revive the ice plant part of the cannery for the fall. The denser the ice the more prized it is for the fisherman to ice down their catch (it lasts longer) -- The town is so named for a fisherman with a fishboat named Pelican. And here I thought we would be able to see Pelicans! We spend 2 days here at it is a quaint place and we meet a good group of people here in the World Famous “Roses” Bar. We go to the bar for cold beer and burgers and are treated to what it is famous for! A group of guys on a sailboat behind us in the marina are encouraged to staple a Dollar bill to the ceiling with their names on it, while standing on the stool – one of the fellows is intent on stapling his dollar bill, Rose, the 80 year old owner comes over and “Pants” the fellow, not just the outside pair of pants, but also his skivvies! It must have been cold in the bar! We have a good time that night and the next day, the boys go out fishing. A few salmond and some rockfish and the ever present story of the one that got away!
